Seeking Success in Life? – 3 Books You Absolutely Need to Read

In seeking success in life I have been a keen student of personal development and I have read my fair share of books on the subject. In fact I am still turning the pages.

I am currently wading my way through Emotional Intelligence: Why it Can Matter More than IQ by Daniel Goleman. I will give you my take on it in a later post so please subscribe to my mailing list if you would like me to let you know when I post it.

In the mean time I am listing three titles below that I think are must-haves if you are interested in seeking success in your life.

Here goes….

#1 – The 7 HABITS of HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE by Stephen R. Covey
Seeking Success, Habits

This book has had phenomenal success. It has been a top seller for 15 years and has been translated into over 30 languages.

As the title suggests Covey introduces 7 habits you can follow when seeking success and looking to become personally effective. The habits are as follows:

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit 4: Think Win-Win,
Habit 5: Seek First to be Understand, Then to be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Together the 7 habits provide a formula for you to consciously develope a meaningful life plan, one which includes all that is important to you. Covey also offers guidance on how you can prioritise what is important in you life and how to implement that plan successfully.

By the way, these principles are not only applicable to adults. Together with his son he published The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers. In my view this book should be on the school curiculum in all junior schools.

#2 – THINK and GROW RICH by Nepoleon Hill

Seeking Success, Napoleon Hill

This book written by Nepoleon Hill was first published in 1937. He was inspired by the great American businessman, Andrew Carnegie. By 2015 the book had sold over 100 million copies!!

Prior to writing THINK and GROW RICH, Hill had spent 20 years studying successful businessmen of the time. He published his findings in the form of ’16 laws’ in his book The Law of Success. He further condensed them to ’13 steps’ in THINK and GROW RICH.

The steps are as follows:

1. Desire
2. Faith
3. Auto-suggestion
4. Specialised Knowledge
5. Imagination
6. Organised Planning
7. Decision
8. Persistence
9. Power of the Mastermind
10. The Mystery of Sex Transmutation
11. The Subconscious Mind
12. The Brain
13. The Sixth Sense

Though the book was published in 1937 and advances in our understanding of the principles of personal development and neuroscience in particular, have taken our understanding of many of the ‘steps’ to a new level, many of the seeking success principles mentioned in the book are as applicable now as they were then.

#3 – CREATE YOUR OWN FUTURE by Brian Tracy

Seeking Success, Create Future, Brian Tracy

This book is one of my favourites. In it Tracy introduces you to 12 success ‘Principles’ as follows:

1. Your potential is unlimited
2. Clarity is Critical
3. Knowledge is power
4. Mastery is Magical
5. Attitude is everything
6. Relationships are essential
7. Money Matters
8. You Are a Genius
9. Results Determne Rewards
10. Seize the Day
11. Character Counts
12. Fortune Favour the Brave

His overiding message in the book is that You Are the Master of Your Own Destiny. Like Hill he suggests there a a number of ‘Laws’ that apply to achieving success in life and key amongst them is the Law of Cause and Effect.

As Tracy puts it, “the Law of Cause and Effect says that everything happens for a reason….nothing happens by chance.” When you use this law to your benefit you can make your success precictable and have it very much in your control.

There is no doubt in my mind that application of the principles he discusses has led to successes in my own life. I suggest you check it out for yourself.

While these three books are my favorites I have read many others that are useful also. What I like about these three is that they educated my on principles and laws that I was not conscious of.

In many ways they point out the obvious but,

“Sometimes the most difficult thing is to be able to see the most obvious thing!”
―Mehmet Murat ildan

These books helped me get over that difficulty and gain clarity on how to proceed on my life journey. I hope they can do the same for you.
